MENTAL HEALTH
Stress can play a major role in one’s mental health. According to Ribeiro, Preira, Freire, Oliveira, Casotti, and Boery (2017), excessive and continuous stress can have detrimental effects on one’s health. Quality of life also becomes very poor. This increases chances of health problems, irritability, depression, fatigue, and problems concentrating. Even though excessive stress causes these issues, these issues can cause even more stress. It is a downward spiral. As we can see, not dealing with our negative stress can be dangerous. So, what do we do about it?
Depending on someone’s mood, that can actually affect how they manage stress. Those who experience more positive emotions can better handle daily stressors (Ong, Bergeman, Bisconti, & Wallace, 2006). As stress increases throughout the day, negative emotions do as well. That means when we’re happy, we are less stressed or we just handle it better. The worse our mood is, the more stressed we are. There are many physical things we can do to lower our stress levels such as exercising, eating right, and getting enough sleep. However, the most basic thing we can do is focus on being happier and more positive.
